Current FDA Daily Values for %DV calculations under 21 CFR 101.9

The most common outdated figure we see on DIY labels is Total Carbohydrate at 300 g. It's 275 g under the current 21 CFR 101.9 table, and it has been since the 2016 rule took effect. If a %DV calculator, spreadsheet template, or old label mock-up you're reusing still shows 300 g, it predates the current rule and every carbohydrate %DV it produces will be slightly wrong.

Do I need a dual-column label for my product?

Dual-column formatting shows two sets of nutrient values on one panel — typically 'per serving' and 'per package' (or 'per unit'). It's triggered under 21 CFR 101.9(b)(12) when your package contains between 200% and 300% of the Reference Amount Customarily Consumed (RACC) for that food category, and it's packaged and sold as a single unit that could reasonably be eaten in one sitting.

A protein-bar startup preparing its first retail run ran into exactly this. Their bar weighed in at roughly 2.4 times the RACC for that snack category, sold as one wrapped unit. A single-column label would have understated what someone actually eats if they finish the whole bar — which almost everyone does — so dual-column formatting wasn't optional for that product, it was required. The founders had assumed a single 'per bar' column was simpler and more honest, not realising the regulation specifically anticipates that exact assumption and requires the 'per serving' comparison alongside it.

If your package sits below 200% of RACC, or above 300%, the trigger doesn't apply and a standard single-column panel is correct. It's the middle band — packages that are ambiguously 'maybe one serving, maybe two' — where dual-column formatting becomes mandatory rather than optional.

Equal prominence matters as much as the trigger itself

Once dual-column applies, 21 CFR 101.9(e) requires both columns to carry equal prominence — matching type size, matching boldness, no visual hierarchy that nudges a shopper toward the smaller-looking number. A common formatting slip is shrinking the 'per package' column or greying it out, which technically satisfies the letter of showing two columns while undermining the point of showing them at all.

It's worth understanding why the RACC matters at all. The Reference Amount Customarily Consumed isn't a target the FDA wants people to eat — it's a fixed benchmark, published by food category, that stops manufacturers from shrinking a declared serving size to make a product look lighter on the label. Without a fixed RACC table, two competing granola bars of near-identical size could declare wildly different serving sizes and become impossible to compare fairly. The dual-column trigger exists specifically to close the gap between that fixed reference amount and what a single packaged unit actually contains.

What's the most common nutrition label rounding mistake?

By far the most common DIY mistake is calculating %DV from the already-rounded gram figure instead of the raw nutrient quantity. The correct order is: compute the exact, unrounded amount of the nutrient per serving, divide by the current Daily Value, then round only the resulting percentage to the nearest whole number. Rounding the gram amount first and then dividing introduces a small but compounding error — usually not enough to flag manually, but enough to fail an automated compliance check that recomputes the panel from source data.

Rounding rules by nutrient

Each nutrient has its own rounding increment, and the increment itself changes above certain thresholds. These are the rules that govern nutrition facts formatting on every current panel:

  • Calories: under 5 calories rounds to 0; 5-50 calories rounds to the nearest 5; above 50 calories rounds to the nearest 10.
  • Total Fat, Saturated Fat, Trans Fat: under 0.5 g rounds to 0; under 5 g rounds to the nearest 0.5 g; above 5 g rounds to the nearest 1 g.
  • Sodium: under 5 mg rounds to 0; 5-140 mg rounds to the nearest 5 mg; above 140 mg rounds to the nearest 10 mg.
  • Total Carbohydrate, Dietary Fiber, Total Sugars, Added Sugars, Protein: under 0.5 g rounds to 0; 0.5-1 g is expressed as 'less than 1 g'; above 1 g rounds to the nearest whole gram.
  • %DV for every nutrient: computed from the unrounded quantity, then rounded to the nearest whole percent as its own final step.

Servings per container has its own separate rounding rule

This one catches people off guard because it's not a nutrient at all — it's the servings-per-container declaration itself. Between 2 and 5 servings, round to the nearest half serving (so 4.3 servings becomes '4.5 servings'). Above 5 servings, round to the nearest whole serving. Get the underlying serving-size math wrong here and every per-serving nutrient figure downstream inherits the error.

That's worth sitting with for a moment. Shoppers are relying on these figures to be right, not just present. A panel that technically has all fifteen mandatory nutrients but rounds a few of them incorrectly is still, in a meaningful sense, giving people wrong information — even if the error would never be visible to the naked eye.

A short formatting checklist before you print

  • Confirm you're using the 275 g Total Carbohydrate Daily Value, not the older 300 g figure.
  • Check whether your package falls in the 200-300% RACC range and needs dual-column formatting.
  • If dual-column applies, verify both columns use matching type size and weight.
  • Recalculate %DV from raw nutrient quantities, not from the rounded gram figures already on the draft label.
  • Apply the correct rounding increment for each nutrient individually — don't round everything to the nearest gram as a shortcut.
  • Round servings-per-container using its own rule, separate from the nutrient rounding rules.
